On the evening of 11 July 2022, we commemorated the joyous occasion of the First Anniversary of Brave Souls Foundation. Brave Souls Foundation, registered as a Trust under the Indian Trusts Act, 1882 since July 2021, founded by Shaheen malik is an organisation of social activists, lawyers, researchers and socially spirited individuals working towards prevention of acid attacks, gender-based violence as well as amelioration and holistic rehabilitation of the victims. The evening began with an introduction by our intern, Janvi Singh, followed by a mesmerizing performance by Ms. Sumaiya Parvin. Our founder, Ms. Shaheen Malik then welcomed the chief guest Ms. Swati Maliwal, the Hon’ble Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) with a bouquet of flowers. A brief video of the journey of Shaheen Malik and Brave Souls Foundation was played for all present. One of the acid attack survivors, Mohini, too recited a powerful and moving poem that she had written about her journey. Ms. Maliwal then took the stage and spoke a few words of inspiration. She spoke about Mohini’s strength and her work at DCW. Mohini previously worked at the Help Desk at DCW, and Ms. Maliwal lauded her resilience. She also talked about the work of DCW, helping over 1,23,000 rape and domestic violence survivors, and all the ways she wishes to advance the cause of women’s safety. She talked of the contributions of Shaheen Malik in cases of acid attack, and how she inspired her. Ms. Maliwal had organised a social experiment about the availability of acid in the local markets. Following Ms Maliwal’s speech, Adv Anuj Kapur (Advocate on Record, Supreme Court of India), Dr Lokesh Kumar (HOD Plastic Surgery Department, BL Kapur Hospital) and Dr shikha Baghi, (Aesthetic Surgeon, Timeless Aesthetics) were felicitated by our founder Ms Malik and Ms Maliwal. This was followed by a cake cutting ceremony by our founder Ms Malik and Ms Maliwal. “Brave Souls Foundation is constantly striving to provide a better life to acid attack survivors in every possible way and we are thankful to Shaheen Ji for this”, said one of the survivors.
