On November 29, 2023, Brave Souls Foundation (BSF-India), in collaboration with Jamia Hamdard University, organised an awareness event on the use and sale of acid, discrimination against survivors, and their struggles. The Vice-Chancellor Prof M. Afshar Alam, of the University extended thanks to the Brave Souls Foundation team for organising the event and promised to open job vacancies for survivors in the university. He encouraged the students to be attentive and take part in the event. He also emphasised on the importance of the spirit young minds have and how they can use social media, or any public platform to spread awareness. Pallavi Sharma, an advocate at Brave Souls Foundation (BSF-India) was the moderator for the event, she initiated the event by extending a heartfelt thanks to the university for collaborating with Brave Souls Foundation and giving us a platform to spread the message. After the Vice-Chancellor message a video was shown to the audience about brave souls foundation and Apna Ghar. In the video there was a strong message from survivors about their journey, struggles, their life after the attack and how they stood again. The video impacted the audience at large. The speakers for the event were, Ms Shaheen Malik, Reshma Bano Qureshi, Saanya Sharma & Haider Ali. Ms. Shaheen Malik, the Founder and Director of the Brave Souls Foundation, is a source of inspiration to many. As an acid attack survivor, she faced numerous struggles and discrimination in various aspects of her life but refused to give up. Since 2013, she has been actively working to support acid attack survivors. In 2021, she established the Brave Souls Foundation and the Apna Ghar shelter home. Ms. Malik shared her experience of an acid attack at her workplace, revealing it was due to the anger of some individuals. Initially unable to comprehend the attack, it took a few seconds for her to feel the burning sensations, and she screamed for help, but bystanders either ignored her or didn't know how to react. After the attack, hospitals refused to admit her, and she underwent 25 surgeries, losing her identity unexpectedly. She highlighted that 95% of acid attack victims are women, often due to rejection or resistance against patriarchal expectations. Ms. Shaheen expressed that no one has the right to use violence or throw acid because of their ego. She urged Jamia Hamdard students to raise awareness about the impact of acid attacks and advocate for a ban on acid sales in society. Reshma Bano Qureshi is an acid attack survivor working as an Office Manager at BSF-India, residing in 'Apna Ghar,' a shelter home initiated by BSF-India. She made history as the first acid attack survivor to walk the ramp at the New York Fashion Week in 2017. Reshma was attacked by her brother-in-law, resulting in the loss of one eye and disfigurement of her face. The attack occurred because she stood against the violence inflicted on her sister. Reshma shared with the audience that she felt hopeless and even contemplated suicide, but she chose to fight against her attacker—for herself, her family, and all women facing this heinous crime. She emphasised that no one has the right to use violence or power against others for the sake of their pride. Reshma urged the audience to refrain from using acid and to support the Brave Souls Foundation in their fight against the sale of acid. Saanya Sharma, psychologist and founder of Your Mental Health Specialist, is an essential part of the BSF-India team, providing crucial mental health support at Apna Ghar for survivors. Actively counselling them, Sharma underscores the lasting trauma survivors face, reliving the experience regularly. While we grapple with minor daily discomforts, survivors undergo a complete life transformation, dealing not only with physical challenges but also enduring mental exhaustion. The constant contemplation of their appearance, family, and the legal battle against perpetrators contributes to their mental fatigue. Sharma highlights the profound impact of a single incident on their lives and urges society to acknowledge the continuous struggle for acceptance and the discrimination faced by survivors. Haider Ali, a young enthusiastic human rights advocate who is a part of BSF-India, has been working against gender based violence and specifically helping survivors at BSF-India by representing them in the courts of law. Advocate Haider, talked about Indian criminal laws governing acid attack and punishment, he explained how the Indian government has been lacking in forming laws against acid attack. Our executive have been failing in execution of laws and maintaining law and order, our judiciary is not providing timely justice, the process is very long and it takes year after year to get their accused punished. He provided a comparative analysis between Indian and Bangladesh criminal laws, that Bangladesh being a developing country formulated a separate law in 2003 against acid attacks and have a separate legislature. He emphasised over a fact that our country needs fast track courts to deal with acid attack matters and should be dealt with urgency. He urged the young students of law to spread awareness, work for the society and use their platform to support survivors. The event was attended by students of Mass Communication and Law. Faculty members from both departments were also present. Adv. (Prof) Anupama Gupta from Jamia Hamdard Law Department used the platform to discuss the meaning of acid attacks, the penal definition, and the recent judgement of the Delhi High Court in the case of Hakim v. State, NCT of Delhi. Dean of Mass communication department of Jamia Hamdard, Ms. Reshma Nasreen, at last extended her heartfelt thanks and support to the BSF-India team, survivors and Jamia Hamdard team for organising this event. She again promised to open a vacancy for acid attack survivors at Jamia Hamdard. Advocate Pallavi Sharma from BSF-India, the moderator for the day, concluded the event by thanking the faculty of Jamia Hamdard University and its students for their support and time in listening to them.
