After a year of consistent hard work, Brave Souls Foundations’ West Bengal Unit celebrated its 1st Anniversary. Event was moderated by Ms Mousumi Bhattacharya (Director, Mudra Dance Troupe), who introduced Brave Souls Foundation’s West Bengal unit. Thereafter Aparajita (Project Coordinator, Brave Souls Foundation’s West Bengal Unit) gave a brief introduction of the organisation and the noble cause for which it works. She also spoke about the eminent personalities, clubs and organisations which support the organisation for the noble cause for which it works. This was followed by a group dance performance by survivors. Our Founder Ms Shaheen Malik spoke about the achievements of Brave Souls Foundation and shared her journey. She said that she knows the pain and agony through which every survivor has to go through and it's very difficult for them to reintegrate in the society. Ms Malik recollected her hardships, her treatment and litigation. The behaviour of the police personnel was indifferent towards her. Now she is fighting for other survivors. She informed survivors that she will soon start a shelter home in Kolkata, similar to the one she has set up in Delhi. Survivors from West Bengal must visit Kolkata since most of the smaller towns still lack adequate treatment and support. However, the major aspect becomes the financial challenge because most survivors are unable to bear the cost of the lodgings, treatments, and other miscellaneous expenses. Therefore, in order to counter and help these survivors, we want to set up a rehabilitation shelter home for the survivors in Kolkata. Following this there was a solo dance performance by Ms. Monisha Pailan, Social Activist and an acid attack survivor. There was a panel discussion of Survivors where each of them shared their experiences and how they are fighting each day to come back to society. The panel included Jhuma Santra who is visually challenged, Angura Bibi who had been forced to drink acid because she gave birth to a girl child, Monisha Pailan (acid attack survivor and social activist), Sanchayita Jadav Dey. Next Panel Discussion was taken by eminent activists and professors of various colleges. They shared their thoughts on the acid sale ban, how acid changes one's life so drastically that a girl loses everything: her identity, her beauty and her normal life. The discussion was focussed on placements for the survivors, their treatment and compensation. This was followed by Panel discussion by advocates, where eminent lawyers like Adv Jayanta Narayan Chatterjee (Kolkata High court) Adv Chaudhari Ali Zia Kabir (Supreme Court of India) and Adv Krittika Bhawsar shared their experience of working with survivors. The last panel discussion was by Doctors and Medical Professionals where they spoke about their individual experience working with the survivors. This discussion was followed by a small play enacted by the survivors sending an awareness message to the society about the corrosive liquid. The program ended by giving certificate to each panellist and a token of love and respect. A grand lunch was arranged for the participants and invitees.
