On 30th March, 2022 Brave Souls Foundation inaugurated its West Bengal Office in Kolkata. It was inaugurated by Chaitali Das of Rakshak Foundation, which works on reviving jute and reforming prisoners. According to the latest NCRB report published in 2021, West Bengal is ahead of all other states in the number of acid attacks. The report stated that West Bengal recorded 34 out of 174 recorded acid attack cases, and 11 attempts to acid-attack, in the country. Out of the 34, 30 were against women. However, this is not the first time that the state has come first in this regard. West Bengal has consistently recorded 50 or more cases since 2017, having topped the list previously in 2018. The NCRB report shows that West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi contribute to almost half of the acid attacks in the country. In 2017, 244 acid attacks were recorded across the country and Bengal came second on the list with 54 incidents of acid attacks. In 2018, 228 incidents of acid attacks were recorded across the country, while there were 240 victims. Of these, West Bengal recorded 50 incidents involving 53 victims. Survivors from West Bengal must visit Kolkata since most of the smaller towns still lack adequate treatment and support. However, the major aspect becomes the financial challenge because most survivors are unable to bear the cost of the lodgings, treatments, and other miscellaneous expenses. Therefore, in order to counter and help these survivors, we want to set up a rehabilitation shelter home for the survivors in Kolkata. We have set up a similar shelter in Delhi called Apna Ghar. The survivors who are seeking to visit for their treatment can stay there, and are supported while they are healing during their treatments, with basic everyday amenities alongside some opportunities to enhance their skills and safely explore choices to enhance their lives. The program started with a welcome speech by Ms Aparajita Bose. Aparajita shared her thoughts about the noble work by Ms Shaheen Malik, Founder & Director of Brave Souls Foundation. Shaheen spoke to the hearts of everyone in attendance “We have started this foundation with the motive that what we are doing for Delhi’s survivors, we can do the same for West Bengal’s survivors. We will try our best to provide medicines. If someone wants to study they can start over again. We will also help them with surgeries. We will also file your cases in court.” Following this Ms Shaheen Malik & Ms Aparajita Bose were felicitated by All India Human rights council’s President Ms Sujata Bhattacharya and Secretary Ms Mousumi Chakraborty. Event was attended by eminent speakers Nandani Bhattacharya, (Founder of All Bengal Men’s Forum), Ex DIG Samir Mitra, Ranjita Sinha, (Executive Director, Gokhale Road Bandhan), Mousumi Bhattacharya, (Director, Mudra Dance Troupe) and Asit Bhattacharya, (Founder, Mudra dance troupe), Sandeep Nandi Majumdar (Councilor) and Mousumi Das (Councilor). All speakers were felicitated by Ms Shaheen Malik. Speakers shared their thoughts about the issues faced by acid attack survivors, their rehabilitation, and skill development programs for them and ways to reintegrate them in the society.
