Zakira was married to Rooaab Ali Sheikh when she was only 18 years old. He hardly worked to earn enough to support their family, forced by these circumstances, she somehow learned to make soap and started selling them in nearby shops. Enraged by this he started to doubt her. On the fateful night of 2nd November 2017, she was asleep with her two children when Rooab threw acid at her. Some of it even fell on her children. She felt like someone had set her body on fire. Zakira’s brother used to stay next door to her, he woke up hearing her painful screams. But Rooab had locked her brother’s house from outside, so he was unable to help her. She collapsed due to the pain and became unconscious. Her brother somehow managed to break the lock and was horrified at her state. The neighbors poured milk on her in the hopes of relieving her pain, and her brother rushed her to the nearest hospital. She was admitted to a Hospital in Mumbai and had suffered burns to the point that she became unrecognizable. She has lost one eye and was unable to open the other eye. Her neck was completely burnt and a breathing pipe had been put in through her neck to help her breathe. She was hospitalized for 5 months and went through several surgeries. She is 70% burn patient, slowly learning to fight for herself and striving to give a better future to herself and her children. She is now a makeup artist and searching for earning opportunities.
